Alimony/Spousal Support

Spousal support is when one spouse is awarded a sum of money from the other spouse, on a temporary or permanent basis, whenever a court determines that the particular facts warrant the situation.
Georgia courts recognize both “temporary” and “permanent” alimony, as well as lump-sum payments.

Temporary Alimony

Temporary alimony may be awarded during a divorce proceeding and can be modified upon the finalization of the divorce.
Temporary alimony can also be awarded after the divorce, but only for a specific period of time. This is to help the receiving spouse to stay financially stable during job searches or training.

Permanent Alimony

Permanent alimony may be awarded for older spouses who may have retired or are not hirable into the workforce. Permanent alimony can be revisited if the spouse remarries, is able to earn a stable income, or become financially sound.
